Kiparoo Farm . . . .
. . . . Home of Beautiful Sheep and Lustrous Yarn
Welcome to the home of beautiful sheep, shiny fleece and lustrous yarn, “We grow it every day”. We invite you to visit our Farm Studio, open every Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm or by a chance. We are here most of the time.
Kiparoo Farm is a small family owned business located on a 158-acre working sheep and dairy farm in rural Frederick County, Maryland. Annie Kelly, the shepherd, has been raising sheep and working in the fiber business for 40 years. She raises Border Leicester sheep and keeps a flock of more than 150 breeding ewes.
Border Leicester sheep are known to producing a beautiful, shiny, lustrous yarn. The Kiparoo Farm sheep are raised specifically for their fleeces and the flock is managed using practices that produce top quality fleece for beautiful yarns. The sheep are sheared twice a year at optimum times, before lambing in the Spring, and before breeding in the Fall.
After shearing the fleeces are sorted and packed, then sent out for scouring (washing) and spinning. Annie works closely with the spinnery to design the yarn. Once the yarn is sent back to the farm the real fun begins, the decision about colors and dyeing.
Annie finds inspiration for colorways in many places – her love of nature, her pastoral surroundings and ethnics influences such as her Norwegian heritage. The yarn is painted and hand-dyed in striking multicolor and solid colorways. Each skein of yarn is then lovingly packaged and labeled.
Original Kiparoo Farm designs are created for all of the yarns and samples are knitted or crocheted for display in the studio. Finally, pictures of the finished garments are taken right on the farm, and are included with the original Kiparoo Farm patterns.
